Introduction :
Imagine a medieval village that seems to be carved directly into the rock, overlooking the crystal-clear waters of the Tarn…
Welcome to Castelbouc !
Accessible only by a small bridge or on foot, this hamlet is one of the best-preserved gems of the Lozère region. Whether you're a lover of old stones, passionate about legends, or simply seeking a breathtaking panorama, Castelbouc is an essential stop on your trip.
A bit of history and legend:
Strolling through the steep alleyways of Castelbouc is like stepping back in time. The village is dominated by the ruins of its 12th-century castle.
- The backstory: Are you familiar with the legend of the "Goat"? It is said that during the Crusades, only one lord remained at the castle. He supposedly "honored" all the women of the village so thoroughly in their husbands' absence that he died of exhaustion… His soul then flew away in the form of a goat, giving his name to the village.
The must-sees of your visit:
-
The view from the top of the village: The view over the Tarn River meander is one of the most photographed in the region. Stop by the "Guinguette les 5 Arches" which offers locally sourced food and drinks… A treat for the taste buds!
-
Typical architecture: admire the houses with slate roofs and stone vaults that keep the air cool even in the middle of August;
-
The pebble beach: At the foot of the village, a natural beach awaits you for a well-deserved refreshing break.
How do I get there?

The "Expert" advice from the "Le Site de Castelbouc" campsite:
To enjoy the magic of Castelbouc without the crowds, we recommend going there by end of day. The light of the setting sun on the limestone gives the village an absolutely magical golden color.
